Custom curtains for In the Meantime

Custom curtains for In the Meantime

I connected with Sepial a little while ago - I hadn’t yet been to eat at her restaurant but I immediately admired her ethos and enthusiasm. I could see how much passion and care she put into the food and beautiful space she was creating. When I finally met her in person, I was so happy to see that all my feelings about her as a person and a chef were true.

And her food is just as good as it looks! I’m vegetarian, and while many of the dishes are meat-focused, all the vegetarian and vegan plates are thoughtful and beautifully balanced - nothing feels like an afterthought. She is truly one of the sweetest people I’ve met and I’m so grateful to have made this connection. So when she asked me to make a Pojagi curtain for the front window, of course I said yes.

I wanted to make something that would complement the simple elegance of the restaurant’s interior: calm and pared back but still inviting and cozy. I worked with leftover patchwork scraps (if you’ve seen the curtain I made for my sister-in-law, you’ll recognize some of the peach & natural linens) as well as a thrifted faded pale pink and peach linen sheet to compose the two panels. I wanted them to echo each other… not quite mirror images but similar in design. I created a more dense patchwork section on one side made up of smaller scraps, and balanced it out with a looser, larger composition on the other to allow more light through. I made long vertical stripes framing the more dense patchwork on either side - a nod to the interior’s tall ceilings and metal posts. I really like the space between the curtains, which makes a sort of pause in between moments and to me perfectly encapsulates “in the meantime”.
