Checkerboard is built from narrow woven panels which I stitched together once they were off the loom, forming a larger cloth - a process which merges my interest in weaving, patchwork and mending. I feel there is a true harmony and balance in my work when I am able to blend all these mediums. For this piece, I used second hand rust coloured linen and the leftover cream cotton thrums from an old warp. I assembled the panels so that the cotton fringe would overlap and obscure some of the linen squares, distorting the checkerboard pattern with rich texture.
Woven on Essie, my small table loom, in July 2025
Dimensions: 45 x 58 cm
Materials: Cotton, linen, copper
A small dowel is hidden at the back to make for easy hanging.
