This quilt started with a pile of offcut scraps. These were the last bits of linen I had and decided to challenge myself to only work with these remaining scraps for one side of the quilt, and I tried as much as possible to use them in their original state (some as tiny as 2 cm2) to avoid waste, letting the shapes come together organically. I appreciate how much one's perception of the work changes when they come closer; all of the join lines that were imperceptible from a distance appear, and offer another dimensionality and depth to the patchwork.
I hand-wove the other side on my floor loom with a second-hand cotton warp and damaged vintage wool, using a twill pattern and a clasped weft technique to create an inlay of shapes inspired by the patchwork side. I hand quilted the sides together with cotton thread and machine and hand stitched the hand woven binding.
Making a quilt is the most powerful medium of expression I’ve ever used - I never thought something soft, pliable and mundane could feel weighty, powerful and magical. Building a large, hefty piece of fabric from nothing but scraps, growing it stitch by stitch, seam by seam… sitting with the weight of it on my lap, fingers bruised and sore, rocking my needle through the material I’ve made from scratch - the experience is unmatched. I think of all the people before me, many of them women, who used quilting as a means of quiet resistance and deep, deep love and want to honour them through this quilt.

Care
Care
- All quilts have been pre-washed and should not shrink, distort or discolour while washing at home.
- Avoid direct sunlight as it may cause colours to fade.
- Do not bleach.
- Spot clean stains / dirt with a damp cloth and gentle detergent (put the detergent on the cloth, not the quilt) when needed. Otherwise, if the quilt isn’t visibly dirty, just let it hang outdoors in the sun for a day.
- But the quilt might need a good wash every now and then. I’d recommend hand washing it in the tub over using a washing machine, as a washing machine even on a delicate cycle will be harsher on the material and you’ll want to keep your precious quilt intact for as long as possible!
- To hand wash the quilt, fill the tub about half with warm water (water that isn’t too hot to the touch, you should be able to have your hands in it comfortably), add a lid of gentle detergent and swirl it around, making sure it’s well mixed (the water should get a little bubbly). Then add the quilt to the tub and let it soak for about 10 mins before agitating the water. Try ‘scrunching’ the quilt up then unfurling it a few times to get the detergent on the material. If there are any visible stains, rub them out with your hands but avoid putting detergent directly on the quilt as it could stain the fabric. After an hour or so of soaking, drain the water and refill the tub with warm water to wash the soap away. Repeat this step if the quilt is still soapy. Then gently squeeze as much of the water out as possible by rolling the quilt onto itself like a burrito and hang it outside to dry on a line.
