🇨🇩 Free Congo 🇸🇩 Free Sudan 🇵🇸 Free Palestine

This quilt is my very small way of trying to give financially to the people in Palestine, Sudan and Congo that need our help.

I decided that I'd like to offer this patchwork quilt in a raffle, so that for a small donation you might get something in return. For R100, your name will be entered in a raffle to win this quilt, and the winner will be announced on the 28th of February.

Each entry = 1 ticket, so purchasing more tickets increases your odds of being selected. To purchase more than one ticket, click 'add to cart' then go to cart and update the quantity there.

About the quilt

This is a small patchwork quilt made from almost all of the tiniest pieces of fabric left in my scrap pile. I wanted to work with what I had and liked the challenge of working with such small pieces in many different colours while still finding a way to keep it balanced and harmonious. I built it up slowly over a few months, while taking in devastating news about the ongoing genocides and humanitarian crises; this is my small way of hoping for peace and liberation for all those suffering.

The back is made up of a larger patchwork of natural linen, pieces of brown gingham, a honey brown and a bright mustard yellow all given to me by a local garment maker. Most of the scraps on the front are from three other fashion brands in Cape Town, as well as some scraps from family clothing (the pieces of light grey linen and dark blue denim) ; and as in all my quilts, I've included a small piece of my handwoven fabric for good luck (the long rectangle of cream and orange striped fabric in the last slide). Everything is machine pieced and then hand quilted with cotton thread, with a 100% cotton batting.

Materials : linen, cotton and synthetic fabrics

Dimensions : 91 x 133 x 90 x 139 cm (a slightly imperfect rectangle)

Care

  • All quilts have been pre-washed and should not shrink, distort or discolour while washing at home.
  • Avoid direct sunlight as it may cause colours to fade.
  • Do not bleach.
  • Spot clean stains / dirt with a damp cloth and gentle detergent (put the detergent on the cloth, not the quilt) when needed. Otherwise, if the quilt isn’t visibly dirty, just let it hang outdoors in the sun for a day.

  • But the quilt might need a good wash every now and then. I’d recommend hand washing it in the tub over using a washing machine, as a washing machine even on a delicate cycle will be harsher on the material and you’ll want to keep your precious quilt intact for as long as possible!

  • To hand wash the quilt, fill the tub about half with warm water (water that isn’t too hot to the touch, you should be able to have your hands in it comfortably), add a lid of gentle detergent and swirl it around, making sure it’s well mixed (the water should get a little bubbly). Then add the quilt to the tub and let it soak for about 10 mins before agitating the water. Try ‘scrunching’ the quilt up then unfurling it a few times to get the detergent on the material. If there are any visible stains, rub them out with your hands but avoid putting detergent directly on the quilt as it could stain the fabric. After an hour or so of soaking, drain the water and refill the tub with warm water to wash the soap away. Repeat this step if the quilt is still soapy. Then gently squeeze as much of the water out as possible by rolling the quilt onto itself like a burrito and hang it outside to dry on a line.
